Every year, OISS hosts the Globie Awards to recognize the members of our community who go above and beyond in their service of international students. We honored five amazing individuals and one group for their contributions on Tuesday, April 15th on the third floor of the International Center.

The Globies are a long-standing tradition in our office and this year marked the 8th year of celebrating students, staff, and community members for their outstanding service to international students and scholars here at Michigan State University.

This year’s ceremony featured video testimonials, created by student filmmaker John Bach, for each of our winners, which spotlighted their unique contributions. The links to the videos are listed below.

This year’s Globie winners are:

Lillian Fox embodies the notion of going beyond the call of duty. As an employee in the Student Accounts Office, Lillian has been instrumental in assisting students in need. As her nominator explained, “Lillian always showed up and went above and beyond for me, she enabled me to have strength to go on and graduate, opening another chapter of my life. I not only got a degree because of Lillian, but I also gained a deeper understanding of how compassion and empathy are life forces that actually keep the world going.” To hear more of Lillian’s story, watch her full nomination video: http://youtu.be/Ce3tJ6Ni7ZQ

Larry and Susan Karnes have been welcoming international students into their lives for nearly ten years. They are both active participants in the International Friendship Program, and  they  have opened their homes to international students for Thanksgiving every year. As their nominator said, “Their’s is a story of impact that extends beyond the student they are frequently placed with, and to extended family members and friends.  They have been to Korea to visit with a former student and her family, they maintain almost weekly Skype conversations with one family, they have hosted families who have come to the US to visit, they have helped former students move within the United States, and in December, they sat with their current student’s parents from China as they watched their daughter participate in MSU’s commencement ceremony.” To learn more about Larry and Susan, watch their full nomination video: http://youtu.be/0vtQvXEXBgo

The MSU India Council demonstrates the impact of having a supportive network of people for international students. The MSU India Council is a group of Indian community members that have come together to education the local community about India, as well as assist members of the Indian community here at MSU. When one Indian student was injured and in the hospital, the India Council came together to visit her in the hospital and help her mother with the logistics of coming to be with her daughter in the hospital.
