“Spectacular” is that word that comes to mind when I reminisce on Friday’s Coffee Hour. For those of you that are unaware, on Friday, February 3 from 4-6 p.m. OISS had a bone marrow drive to register people to see if they were a match to be a donor for one of our Spartans, or for people nationwide. We created an event on Facebook and invited as many people as we could think of, tweeted about it and wrote a blog. We had a great turn out and OISS, along with Eric from Be the Match®, were rushing around trying to register everyone as quickly as possible.
The Coffee Hour was a huge success and I am so pleased to have had so many people come out and support the great cause! 153 people came out to register for the Be the Match registry®. My coworkers Mark, Jessica and I led the tables where we each registered 2 at a time and our other coworker Hashim helped with giving out stickers and some packets. We had a line out the door for registry and the event lasted until 6:30 p.m. instead of 6. People from all over came – even from Kalamazoo! International and local students, scholars, and faculty came to register and those who could not register wished their best and said they would register online later.
In order to register, we had to have people fill out a 3-4 page form and swab all 4 corners of their mouth. My coworkers and I had the job of putting stickers on the form, the envelopes, the swab packet and the swabs themselves. We had to rush to try and get all the stickers on in a timely manner so that we did not hold up the line. By the end of the night I was shaking from going so fast!
It was a truly incredible time and I am so fortunate to know that Spartans help Spartans! If you missed the event for any reason and still would like to register to help save a life, you can do so online or in person, please see: http://marrow.org/Join/Join_the_Registry.aspx
Thank you again to all those who came out to support our student!
