Gerstacker Entrepreneurial Grant Program

The Gerstacker Entrepreneurial Grant Program is an opportunity for MSU undergraduate students pursuing a degree in any of the STEM colleges (i.e., Agriculture and Natural Resources, Engineering, Lyman Briggs, or Natural Science) to compete for funding to commercialize an original research concept with entrepreneurial potential. Students will develop a product idea, learn how to explore its commercialization potential, and compete for funding with the goal of getting their concept into use or production. Finalists will be awarded up to $5,000 to fully develop their concept.

Program Overview
The goal of the Gerstacker Entrepreneurial Grant Program is to cultivate a foundation of entrepreneurial understanding while providing an avenue for students to practice and implement innovative critical thinking and analysis. Interested students should submit a preliminary proposal that explores the relevance and feasibility of their concept, its market potential, and required resources. A select number of proposals will be awarded mini-grants (up to $500) to further develop their concept and to assemble a team. Finalists will each be awarded up to $5,000 to fully develop their plans. Student innovators will have access to faculty mentors, graduate students, intellectual property experts, and key individuals from the private sector to assist them through the process.

Students awarded a Gerstacker grant must be an enrolled undergraduate at MSU throughout the entire funding period (Fall 2011-Spring 2013, excluding summers), be in good academic standing, and have previously demonstrated their ability to work as both an independent and interdependent member of a team. Proposals must reflect the student’s original idea although faculty will serve as mentors. Teams of students may apply, but the lead applicant must be affiliated with one of the STEM colleges.
